SAOLA was founded in 2018 by Guillaume Linossier in Annecy, France. The Frenchman's goal is to create comfortable shoes with the smallest possible ecological footprint. "Big life, small footprint!" - Whether you're in the city or enjoying nature, your SAOLA sneakers provide a carefree walking experience for every occasion.
By choosing the brand name SAOLA, the company aims to raise awareness about the vulnerability of biodiversity and the urgency of its protection. Because "Saola" is a highly endangered antelope species, with only about 300 specimens remaining - Saolas are also referred to as "Asian unicorns." This species was first discovered in 1992 in the mountainous regions between Vietnam and Laos.
Each pair of shoes is super light and is made from 3-4 recycled plastic bottles (certified with the Recycled Global Standard), and the soles are made from innovative and natural materials such as algae-based biofoam and cork. They are produced under fair working conditions near Hanoi, Vietnam. SAOLA calculates its entire CO2 emissions with the company UTOPIES. Currently, one pair of shoes generates 7.25 kg of CO2 equivalents, roughly equivalent to the production of 2 Big Macs, a 60 km drive in a VW Golf, or 3 days of Netflix streaming. By 2025, SAOLA aims to halve the CO2 footprint of its shoes. The brand's commitment is to reduce emissions in its production and not to simply purchase emission reductions through offsetting projects.
For every pair of shoes sold, the 100% vegan shoe brand also supports projects with 1% of its revenue that work towards preserving the natural habitats of wildlife and protecting biodiversity.
